The Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Injury Prevention is seeking to contract with qualified persons to facilitate Adult Mental Health First Aid. Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a ground breaking training program that teaches the skills needed to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance abuse challenges and crises.
Individuals trained in MHFA will grow their knowledge of signs, symptoms, and risk factors of mental illness and addictions. They will also be able to identify multiple types of professional and self-help resources for individuals with mental illness or addiction, increase confidence in and likelihood to help an individual in distress and show increased mental wellness themselves.
Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructors have been taught and learned how to teach a simple 5-step strategy that includes assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other supports. Instructors will cover challenges such as mental health illnesses including depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis, and substance use disorders.
Instructors will work with another co-facilitator, helping adults learn life-saving skills. Facilitators provide education to help others learn to recognize & reach out to a loved one, friend, or neighbor who may be developing a mental health illness, substance abuse problem or experiencing crisis.
Classes are held online or in person as scheduled. Instructors are expected to prepare for each class, debrief after the class ends, and assist as needed with preparation for day-of-class needs and continuing education. Each instructor is expected to already have successfully completed the MHFA Instructor Training and be a fully certified trainer, as well as teach AT MINIMUM THREE CLASSES PER YEAR.
