Role of the City Attorney:
Appointed by the City Commission, this role provides direction and oversight for all legal matters of the City. The City Attorney is responsible for general supervision of all legal functions handled by the City’s Law Department. Some major responsibilities include performing research, conducting investigations, providing legal opinions and advice to the City Commission, the City Manager and others in the organization, overseeing the preparation and presentations of cases in court on behalf of the City, ensuring the enforcement of laws, and directing a wide variety of other professional legal work. In addition to the oversight of the Law Department staff, this position supervises and monitors the work of any outside legal counsel hired by the City to perform various legal assignments. The Attorney’s Office has a FY26 operating budget of $3,756,121.
