Compartment 4 - Stand 1 (Mark to Cut) Cut all black cherry with black knot present. Mark to 80 BA. Remove in order of preference: aspen, balsam fir, beech, maple, cherry, hemlock, birch, white pine. Retain large and very large diameter trees to become seed source. Create canopy gaps around quality yellow birch and black cherry. Create gaps up to 2 acres around very large diameter trees, and closer to 1 chain around smaller trees. Create up to 3 to 5 gaps per acre. Compartment 4 - Stand 3 (Mark to Cut) Cut all aspen; create an opening around the cut aspen clumps (more than 3 aspen in close proximity) up to 2 chains in diameter. Cut all balsam fir. Thin rest of stand down to 70-80 BA; aspen and balsam fir removal areas do not count against residual BA. Remove based on tree form and quality. Size distribution is not as important this entry. Cut all cherry with black knot. Compartment 4 - Stand 5 (Mark to Cut) Mark to 80-90 BA of residual stocking; mark to 90 BA where existing stocking is 140 BA or greater. Mark to release the best quality trees of any species; try to keep 30-40 BA of cherry where possible if quality is fair. Leave yellow birch and hemlock if they look like they will persist until the next harvest (20 years). Compartment 4 - Stand 6 (Mark to Cut) Reduce standing BA by 1/3 to approximately 110 BA. Remove hardwoods and balsam fir, then poor form and small diameter red pine. Compartment 4 - Stands 8, 21, 22 & 34 (Mark to Leave) Mark to leave 40 BA of white pine and a combination of black cherry, maple, spruce and yellow birch (where it is available). Try to leave trees with good crowns that will survive and be able to produce seed. Reserve hemlock (counts toward residual goal). There is a very large white pine marked in green to be reserved within Stand 21. All aspen should be marked to leave within 500’ of the South Branch of Stutts Creek.
