1) Mark trees to be cut (blue paint). Favor the best future crop trees in place, regardless of species. 2) Leave den and nest trees. 3) The objective is an all-age stand structure, with a max diameter of 18” at DBH in hardwood stands. 4) Retain all hemlock, oak, cedar and pine, unless removal is needed for operability. 5) Where there is 30 sq. ft. or more of hemlock, thin to less than 100 sq. ft. of BA. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment. 6) Release oak on three sides to a residual BA of 60 sq. ft. 7) Further guidance will be discussed at pre-work meeting. 8) Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 sq. ft. of BA. Favor to leave: oak, hemlock, mast producing black cherry, white pine, red pine and cedar. Follow the guidelines set forth in “The Complete Marker”.
