The material shall be from naturally deposited salt formations in or on the ground and shall be mined from the ground. Salt derived from the process of evaporating sea water or brackish ground water is not an acceptable alternative to mined salt. The material shall be for snow and ice control and for no other purpose. 1. Chemical Requirements The sodium chloride shall conform to the following requirement as to chemical composition: Sodium chloride (NaCl) min. % = 95.0 2. Physical Requirements The sodium chloride shall conform to the following requirements for particle size distribution, when tested by means of laboratory sieves: Sieve Size Weight % Passing 3/8 inch 95-100% No.4 20-90% No.8 10-60% No.30 0-15% NOTE: Detailed requirements for these sieves are given in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 14.02, E11 Specification for Wire-Cloth Sieves for Testing Purposes. 3. Sampling/Testing - All Sodium Chloride All testing shall be made in accordance with current ASTM methods, Designations: C 136 and E 534. All sampling shall be in accordance with current MassDOT policy as outlined in the latest MassDOT Material Manual.
