25 Chestnut Street is currently the site of the Newton Police Department Annex building. Beginning in 1984, the City leased several parking spaces at 25 Chestnut Street to the owner of 1 Chestnut Street, Newton, MA. The lease agreement expired on September 30, 2024. The Newton Police Department evaluated its parking needs at 25 Chestnut Street and determined that it did not require use of the Parking Spaces as shown in the Site Plan (Attachment A). Given that the Parking Spaces would provide limited parallel parking options, the property has limited usefulness. The reuse process began with the Parking Spaces being declared surplus and subsequently deemed unnecessary for municipal purposes. The Real Property Reuse Committee of the Newton City Council met on February 7, 2025 and voted to recommend that the Parking Spaces and Proposed Access Easement. The City Council voted on March 3, 2025 to authorize the Parking Spaces and Proposed Access Easement for sale, setting the minimum price of the sale at $276,000 (See Board Order #205-24 at Attachment B.) The RFP provides details on the overall project, submission requirements, and selection criteria.
