1. GENERAL Work under this Item shall consist of the Contractor furnishing all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to repair bituminous concrete surfaces using the infrared process. Locations to be repaired shall be selected by the Director or his/her designee. 2. MATERIALS New hot mix asphalt shall be provided and added to the repair area as necessary to ensure integrity of repair. Hot mix asphalt shall be in accordance with MassDOT standard specifications. 3. EQUIPMENT Equipment used in the performance of the work required by this section of the specification shall be subject to engineer approval and maintained in a satisfactory working condition at all times. The Infrared Pavement Heater shall be truck mounted equipment capable of heating the existing asphalt to a working temperature of 300°F. 4. CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES 4.1 Traffic Control Unless otherwise specified, the roadway shall be kept open to traffic at all times, with traffic discontinued on the lane being surface treated. 4.2. Preparation of Pavement 4.3 (a) Repair area shall be thoroughly swept or blown clean to remove dirt and debris from the pavement surface. Work Procedure (a) (b) Existing asphalt shall be heated to 300°F using the infrared process to a depth of 2"to allow reworking and remixing the asphalt without oxidation or burning. Surface temperatures shall not exceed 350°F. Enough of the existing asphalt shall be removed to allow the addition of new asphalt (approximately 1" of depth) to be blended with the existing heated material within the repair area. The repair area shall be reshaped by hand to match the grade of the adjacent pavement. (c) The repaired area shall be compacted with a steel drum roller to provide a smooth, tight surface matching the grade of the adjacent pavement. 4.4 (d) Excess material and debris shall be swept up and properly disposed.
