Provide a valuation for two battle flags from the Revolutionary War. Flag RI-54 – • This flag is from the 1st Continental Infantry, height = 51.25”, width = 69.5”, which is a Revolutionary War era silk flag with 13 painted stars and the inscription “R ISLAND Reg.” The flag is consisting of three pieces of fabric, sewn together along with horizontal with 0.125” flat-felled seams and folded at the hoist edge to create a sleeve. No selvages are visible, the canton is pieced into the top hoist corner of the flag – perhaps a later addition to the yellow ground flag (i.e., a RI Militia flag in use before 1776 and then updated for the Revolutionary War). The details of construction for the canton are obscured by the netting treatment. • Various areas of loss, ranging in size from 0.25” diameter to 5” x 1” and splitting in the fabric – these are marked on the appended sketch and documentation. Due to the netting treatment, 0.125” diameter pieces of the flag and stars are actively falling off. The size of the pieces corresponds to the size of the circles in the net, i.e., the net has ‘cut’ the fabric into tiny pieces. The fly half of the flag is missing, so the original size is unknown. Flag RI-55 – • This flag is from the 2nd Continental Infantry, height = 65.5”, width = 86.5”, which is a Revolutionary War era silk flag, with 13 painted stars and appliqued R.I. Coat of Arms. The flag is consisting of three pieces of fabric, sewn together along the horizontal with 0.25” flat-felled seams; there is also a vertical seam at the center bottom. No selvages are visible. The canton is two panels of silk, front and back, each painted with stars: the canton measures 26.5” H x 31.5” W. The host edge has a piece of synthetic fabric folded over the raw edge of the hoist to create a sleeve; the sleeve is now 2.75” wide. The coat of arms in appliqued in mirror image to both sides. • Various areas of loss, ranging in size from 0.25” diameter to 28” x 4” and splitting in the fabric. Above the coat of arms is a loss that appears to have been a painted inscription but has only a few bits of paint at the edges. Due to the netting treatment, 0.125” diameter pieces of flag and stars are actively falling off. The size of the pieces corresponds to the size of the circles in the net, i.e., the net has ‘cut’ the fabric into tiny pieces.
