The sanding systems are prioritized to be maintained in full working order without interruption at both the North Avenue and Cromwell facilities. The Silo Air Sand Plumbing Systems pump traction sand into each Light Rail Vehicle operating on the trackway, providing critical stability during operation on rain, snow or ice weather events. The two Silo Air Sand Plumbing Systems are one of a kind, custom built to pump sand from sand towers through supply lines and into Light Rail Vehicles operating along the MDOT MTA trackways. The Silo Air Sand Plumbing System components are rudimentary but aged. Diagnosing, maintenance, and repair of component parts, such as pinch valves, supply lines, pressure regulators, and or diaphragms requires comprehensive knowledge of the function each component provides towards the proper flow of sand through the Silo Air Sand Plumbing system.
