- BACKGROUND
The U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit SOUTH (NAMRU SOUTH) Bacteriology Department conducts detection, surveillance and characterization of bacterial disease threats to U.S. and host nation service members operating in the SOUTHCOM Area of Responsibility and supports development of novel countermeasures to eliminate those threats. The Bacteriology Department has been awarded Global Emerging Infections Surveillance (GEIS) Network funds to establish or strengthen surveillance for bacterial infections in multiple settings, including but not limited to: hospitals, infected wounds, diarrheal infections, and infections occurring in remote areas, etc.in both civilian and military populations in Latin American countries such as Honduras. Samples are sent to NAMRU SOUTH for the detection of the most common gastrointestinal pathogens including viruses, bacteria and parasites that cause infectious diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
