The project includes the construction of Phase 2 of a new bypass road to carry traffic around downtown Presque Isle. The project will tie into U.S. Route 1 south of downtown and extend to the terminus of the previously construction Phase 1 portion, which is a temporary intersection with Conant Road. The Phase 2 bypass alignment (also known as Segment 1) will cross Henderson Road, Maine Northern Railway, Easton Road and Conant Road, replacing the existing at-grade intersection at Conant with an overpass bridge. Proposed Roadways The bypass is planned to be a two-lane road, one lane in each direction, with shoulders on each side of the road. The northeastern terminus of Segment 1 will be an at-grade connection with Segment 2 of this project south of Conant Road. Segment 2 of the bypass is planned to include twenty significant cut and fill areas of at least 15 feet to reach design grades, including the following: Typical 15- to 20-foot cut from Sta. 29+00 to 36+50; Typical 10- to 29-foot fill from Sta. 101+00 to 103+50; Typical 10- to 25-foot cut from Sta. 104+50 to 111+00;
