Specifications include, but are not limited to: The annual surveying of caves harboring federally endangered and threatened bat species. These surveys are critical to the recovery of these animals. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) is responsible for management of the Commonwealth’s nongame species, including the 14 species of bat know to presently reside within its boundaries. Monitoring population trends of the State’s bat species involves both collection of third party data related to bat surveys and conducting targeted research and monitoring activities throughout the State. All data collected, either by KDFWR and its contractors, or by outside third parties via the State Scientific and Educational Collection Permits, are housed in a database managed by KDFWR personnel. Ultimately, these data are analyzed by KDFWR personnel in order to 1.) Assist in Federal listing decisions. 2.) Determine Species of Greatest Conservation Need. And 3.) Provide technical guidance to outside entities.
