2.1.1 Lightweight Aggregate Fill shall be expanded shale, expanded clay or expanded slate that is included on the Department’s Approved List. The Lightweight Aggregate Fill must meet all properties of Section 2.2 of this note. Project-specific material samples from approved Suppliers should be submitted for approval at least 30 calendar days prior to beginning work. Materials from Suppliers not on the Approved List may be used provided that the materials are submitted for approval at least 30 calendar days prior to beginning work, and the materials are accepted after testing. 2.1.2 Geotextile Fabric shall be in accordance with Section 843 of the Standard Specifications for a subsurface drainage and separation fabric. 2.2 PROPERTIES The Lightweight Aggregate supplier is responsible for maintaining a quality control program to ensure compliance with all requirements of this section (2.2). All requirements of Section 2.2 shall be certified to be acceptable by the Supplier. The Department will test all the properties from Section 2.2 below during construction, except the angle of internal friction (2.2.7). However, testing of the angle of internal friction may be requested by Department, if deemed necessary. The lightweight aggregate fill material shall meet the material requirements below. 2.2.1 Unit Weight (compacted, dry): from 30 pcf to 60 pcf The Lightweight Aggregate Manufacturer will be required to provide material with a dry unit weight between 30 pcf and 60 pcf to be placed on the Approved List. These measured unit weights will be in the oven-dry condition.
