Navigation systems are now commercially available to provide by-the-inch vehicle positioning to a mapped “path”. During operation, the system locates the position of the plow truck on an in-cab display and provide feedback to the operator if the vehicle deviates a set lateral distance from its programmed path. These systems reduce the impact of bad visibility or deep snow on plowing efficiency, allowing us to better keep up with conditions and providing safer conditions for plow drivers and safer roads for travelers. The Iowa DOT is seeking a plow navigation system that meets the following requirements: • The navigation system must not control the plow truck directly. The navigation system is simply a “driver aid”. • At minimum, the system must have a screen for the driver to check path position, as well as visual or audio warnings for path departure • The system must be accurate to within +-4 inches and maintain accuracy and reliability at speeds up to 35 mph and in heavy snowfall. • Product is a Commercial off the Shelf product that will take little to no customization to implement within the DOT. • System must not send automatic updates to DOT-owned equipment • Vendor must have service personnel within 150 miles of an Iowa DOT maintenance facility
