1. Plankton Nets – components include a metal hoop, a mesh net, and a removable cod end assembly. a. Quantity: 50 full nets b. Metal Hoop Frame i. must be made of rigid, waterproof material ii. diameter 30 cm exactly iii. must have 12 evenly spaced attachment points to attach net. Attachment points must fit the grommets described in section c.iii and hold securely. c. Mesh Net i. Mesh filtration size of exactly 64 microns ii. Net opening (top) exactly 30 cm diameter iii. Net opening (top) must have 12 evenly spaced attachment points reinforced with rustproof, brass grommets exactly ½ inch in diameter. The net must attach securely to the Metal Hoop Frame via the attachment points described in section b.iii. The net must be able to be removed from the frame manually (by hand), without tools. iv. Net length must be within the range of 120-140 cm v. Net must taper in width from the top opening (exactly 30 cm diameter) to the bottom opening (bottom opening diameter must be within the size range of 9-10 cm) vi. Both net openings must be finished with fray proof, waterproof, heavy-duty ripstop material d. Removable Cod End Assembly i. The assembly is made up of two pieces: the Collar and the Cod End Piece ii. Collar 1. Material: Made of hard plastic or PVC, smoothed to prevent snagging or injury 2. Dimensions: a. Diameter: 9 cm exactly in order to be compatible with insertion into net body and coupling with cod end piece. b. Height: 2 inches plus-or-minus ½” or 5 cm plus-or-minus 1 cm. 3. Manufactured with a groove for a hose clamp on one end to secure the collar to the net 4. Manufactured with a screw-in thread or snap-together design on the opposite end to attach the cod end piece to the collar iii. Cod End Piece 1. Material: Made of hard plastic or PVC, smoothed to prevent snagging or injury 2. Dimensions: Height must be within the range of 5 inches to 5.25 inches or 12 cm to 13 cm in height. Diameter must be 9 cm. Must be compatible with the Collar. 3. The interior of the piece must be hollow 4. One end must be threaded to mate with Collar 5. Other end must be weighted to assist with movement of net through the water column. 6. The end opposite the threading must have a mesh covering to allow water movement out of the cod end while retaining samples a. Maximum mesh filtration size: 64 microns. 2.
