The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) currently operates two aircraft: a Beechcraft King Air and a Kodiak. While the King Air remains safe and airworthy, its service life is approaching an inevitable end. Originally serving in the U.S. Army for 20 years, the aircraft was transferred to the Idaho State Police in 1999 under the Federal 1033 Program. To extend its operational life, ITD funded a major refurbishment, and the aircraft is now operated by the Division of Aeronautics on behalf of the Idaho State Police. The King Air serves as a critical asset for the State of Idaho, providing transportation for emergency response, law enforcement operations, and official state business. It is currently the only all-weather passenger aircraft available for statewide government use. ITD Aeronautics pilots and maintenance personnel are fully trained on the King Air platform. This extensive experience provides several key benefits when procuring a replacement aircraft of the same type, including enhanced safety, operational confidence, and optimal utilization of the aircraft's capabilities. ITD pilots have undergone structured training that has ensured proficiency in the aircraft's systems, handling characteristics, and emergency procedures—preparing them for a smooth transition to a new or upgraded King Air.
