Pinellas County is replacing the Madonna Boulevard Bridge. The County is proposing a 180-foot-long bridge with three equal spans of 60 feet to help improve water flow and reduce scour through the canal. The proposed bridge will have an overall width of 49-feet, 8-inches, providing two 12-foot lanes, shoulders, and a 6-foot sidewalk on both sides. The preliminary engineering report performed in 2020 determined the existing bridge, constructed in 1957, should be replaced. The study examined the condition of the bridge and scour evaluations were performed. The study found the superstructure to be in good condition due to the deck replacement in 2005; however, the 14” piles exhibit excessive section loss and the bridge was determined scour critical. Due to the time in which the bridge was originally designed, the shear capacity of the existing concrete beams is unknown and the bridge is functionally obsolete.
