Badge Plating and Finishing Gold electroplating shall be a minimum of 22K gold and a minimum of 90 micro-inches in thickness at all points on the badge. Silver colored badges shall have Rhodium plating. The plating shall be a minimum of 40 micro-inches in thickness at all points on the badge. All plating thicknesses will be verifiable by ASTM B568 X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) or other appropriate testing methodologies. The front finish on the badge shall be highly polished, mirror finish, and the badge back surface shall be completed with a satin finish. Badges shall not have visible tool marks, flashing, burrs or other such imperfections. All badges are to be coated with a hardened clear coating of at least 1.5 mils thick. The clear coating must not flake, peel, change color with age, or crack. The clear coating shall be resistant to chemicals, abrasives, and protect the badge from pitting or tarnishing due to environmental conditions. The back of each badge shall be a solid design and shall have the badge serial number stamped or permanently engraved on its back face. The manufacturer shall stamp or engrave the firm name or identifying mark, the month or manufacture and year code on the back of all badges. Badge Artwork Each badge shall have the JSO logo shield and lettering die stamped or engraved on its face, according to the examples. All lettering, numerals and images shall be clean cut, distinct, equally spaced, and in absolute alignment. These characteristics shall remain throughout the life of the badge.
