The improvements consist of furnishing all labor and materials for the bridge rehabilitation including replacement of the concrete deck, barriers, joints, and bearings, cleaning and painting the existing steel beams, sidewalk improvements, repairs to the substructure, addressing erosion concerns alongside slopes, and minor approach roadway work. Deterioration of the existing concrete deck has caused the riding surface to be in poor condition with numerous concrete spalls and asphalt patching. Future deterioration of the concrete deck will lead to structural deficiencies of the element. Expansion joint failure has caused deterioration of the steel beam ends, steel bearings, and concrete piers that will continue to worsen unless addressed. Rehabilitation work will help to extend the remaining service life of the bridge. Bridge 1-655 has a sufficient rating of 70.0 and is ranked 81st on the 2018 DelDOT Bridge Deficiency List, out of 1625 total bridges. Follow other incidental construction in accordance with the location, notes and details shown on the plans, and as directed by the Engineer.
