Specifications include, but are not limited to: MEDIA INSTALLATION 1. General a. Install media in strict accordance with media manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions and filter manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions. b. Protect filter cells during installation of media. c. Media shall be placed hydraulically. Carefully distribute media into cells simultaneously, placing media in sequential layers. Do not fill one cell at a time. d. Avoid bowing the cell sheets during the filling process. Repair any damage to filter cells as a result of media installation at no additional cost to the Owner. e. Thoroughly clean filter tanks and all filter components including underdrain system and plenum, washwater troughs, and piping before any filter media is placed and keep clean throughout entire operation. Remove and dispose of media contaminated in any way and replace with clean media. f. Mark level lines on one wall of each filter cell at finish surface elevations of each media layer. g. Transport and place media carefully to prevent contamination of any sort. The Contractor is cautioned against the handling of any agent or material that may be considered a pollutant to the public water supply. The media shall be protected from contamination from hydrocarbons, oils, gasoline, salts, solvents, etc. during transport and delivery operations. h. Do not walk directly on filter media or cell sheets. Work from planks so that the material below cannot become damaged or mixed. i. All GAC filter media installation work shall be performed under the direct supervision of a qualified representative of the GAC media supplier. j. Sand media installation shall conform to the requirements of AWWA B100. k. GAC media installation shall conform to the requirements of AWWA B604. 2. Installation of sand media: a. Place silica sand media as required to bring the sand surface to the proper elevation. Finished media depth shall be 5.5 inches. b. Manufacturer shall backwash filter cells. c. Remove surface fines by scraping after each washing. d. Replace scrapings with new material after each washing to obtain the required depth.
