5919A - North Campus Horizontal Well Project

Aurora Water's North Campus System (NC System) is a raw water collection and delivery system developed under the City's innovative Prairie Waters System which completed construction in 2010. The NC System supplies raw water that has undergone Riverbank Filtration (RBF) to the Binney Water Purification Facility where it is treated and delivered to City customers.

The mission behind the NC System is to increase the firm yield of the City's water resource portfolio, especially in drought years, to achieve a higher standard of drought hardening. The goal of an expansion such as this has increases resiliency, provides critical infrastructure which contributes to the City's base operation and supply, and contributes greatly to the WISE water compact.

The North Campus Horizontal Well Project will construct an innovative Radial Collector Well. In short, this well collects water across ten (10) 150-to-200ft radially oriented pipes drilled horizontally from a central concrete caisson that is drilled down to bedrock. In addition, a small pump house will be constructed above the caisson to house all electrical and mechanical components that will pump the water across the river to the rest of the Prairie Waters system. Studies suggest this well type will be more efficient than existing wells.
