El Paso County is soliciting bids from qualified, experienced, professional Contractors to furnish all materials, labor and equipment necessary for the Calhan Highway Bridge (over Big Sandy Creek) Replacement Project, which generally includes demolition and construction of the bridge with an onsite detour.
The existing Calhan Highway Bridge, Structure No. EPC 0129-09.07, has a roadway width of approximately 24 feet, and the existing 96’ long, 2-span structure was built in 1975. The superstructure is constructed with double-tee girders with an asphalt topping. The current structure is load posted (18T/27T/26T) due to aging girders, pier caps, joints, elastomeric pads, etc. The flanges and concrete pier caps are exhibiting cracking, delamination, spalling, and exposed reinforcing steel. In addition, the girders also show signs of spalling, cracking, scaling, and delaminated. Due to the extensiveness of the bridge repairs a full replacement was recommended in lieu of rehabilitation. The bridge is not within a designated FEMA 100-year floodplain of the Calhan Drainage Basin (BCBG1000).
