Description

Background –Several wildlife crossings structures were completed on US 160 East of Durango in 2016. In two to three years several additional structures are expected to be built as a Phase II of this project. This project is in an area of daily and seasonal large game movements across the highway. The goal of the project was to provide connectivity for mule deer and elk and other wildlife. In all western U.S. states, agencies have difficulty in creating wildlife crossings structures and fences that succeed in motivating herds of elk to move beneath roads in these dedicated wildlife crossing structures. It is important to CDOT and other departments of transportation to learn if the new arch structure at Mile Post (MP) 97.5 on US 160 is successful in providing this connectivity for not only several individual elk, but herds of the animal. The project also placed EnviroGrid cellular confinement systems on the ground at fence ends to deter hooved animals from entering the road right of way, and CDOT is interested in knowing the effectiveness of this mitigation option.

With a dedicated research project using camera-traps to monitor wildlife at these mitigation efforts, CDOT could learn if the wildlife crossing at MP 97.5 and the new soil containment system worked in meeting the goals of motivating elk and mule deer to move beneath the road at the structure. This study also aims to provide results to help in the adaptive management of the existing infrastructure and the design/installation of Phase II infrastructure.
