The Karuk Tribe requests proposals for constructing a community smoke house and mesh racks in Orleans and Happy Camp, CA. Contractors may choose to bid solely on the construction of the smokehouses or to include educational resources—such as material supply lists, step-by-step instructions, blueprints, and similar materials. Proposals that incorporate the educational component will be given preference. Additionally, priority will be given to bidders who are able to construct smokehouses at both project locations. Responsibilities include purchasing materials necessary for the construction, developing educational resources, coordinating with Food Sovereignty Staff for site visit(s), communicating dates for construction, and constructing the smoke house and mesh racks. The scope of work includes purchasing appropriate materials (redwood/cedar lumber, drying racks, roofing materials, nails, screws, hinges, etc.), developing education resources (materials needed, step-by-step process, blueprint), attending planning meetings with site supervisors and Food Sovereignty staff, preparing (cleaning debris, leveling the ground) in the identified location and constructing the Smoke House. Important note: there is flexibility around build out dimensions that do not exceed 35-40 square feet Task 1. Plan, purchase, and construct a 6’ by 6’ smoke houses using traditional types of wood (redwood or cedar) plus a roof that is water resistant (steel, non-colored panels). Also including a locking door, 2 drying racks with food safe, stainless steel racks. 2. Develop an educational resource for future program/community use that include, supply material list, step-by-step how to build process, blue prints, and tips for beginner stage builders. Required: ● Experience with construction ● Knowledge of Karuk traditional smoke houses ● Responsible for cleanup and disposing of scrap wood/materials in construction zone ● Work with Food Sovereignty staff regarding site visit, planning meetings and construction dates
