The program requires playground equipment have been specifically adapted for our population. This includes customized access to all equipment, ADA compliant ramps, modified height and width of stairs and climbing structures, custom railings at specialized heights with no fall zones and soft surfacing is required throughout). Children are transported in specialized wagons, adapted strollers or wheelchairs and may need full adult assistance to transition between places or access playground equipment. For independent or assisted mobility, children use electric powered transport vehicles, wheeled gait trainers, walkers and gait harnesses. Adults need to access all play spaces to assist children and prevent injury. The playground serves as a safe learning space for exploration and promotion of development in all areas as well as an enhancement to the classrooms and individual therapy services at the UCLA Intervention Program.
