As part of this project, Golden West College will replace three aging facilities—the PE-Rec (Gymnasium, Building 18), the Men’s Phys Ed (Building 10), and the Women’s Phys Ed (Building 11)—with a single new building. Constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, these facilities have significantly deteriorated. Roofing, HVAC, and utility infrastructure have surpassed their useful life, while accessibility and energy efficiency no longer meet modern standards. These deficiencies have resulted in regular disruptions, high maintenance costs, and limited functionality for instructional and athletic programs. Together, the three buildings total 69,696 gross square feet (GSF). The new facility will provide 2,400 assignable square feet (ASF) of lecture space, 3,693 ASF of lab space, 4,478 ASF of office space, and 39,604 ASF for physical education and other uses. Given the central location and unique nature of the physical education program, careful coordination of demolition and construction activities will be essential to minimize disruption to campus operations and ensure safety throughout the project. Planning for this project must consider the future objectives of the Coast District 2045 Facilities Plan. This building complex will be a Title 24 and DSA compliant project. The project program has been approved by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office and must adhere to the requirements as stated on the Final Project Proposal. Item 2: Programming and conceptual planning of approximately 50,000 square feet of future athletic support facilities to ensure continuity of planning and integration with the approved state funded project. This project is partly funded by state capital outlay funds and will need to meet the requirements as stated on the California Community College Chancellor’s Office - Facilities Planning Manual.
