Sonoma County is susceptible to a plethora of natural disasters, including but not limited to fires, flooding, earthquakes, and tsunamis, with multiple events of such nature potentially occurring within a single calendar year. Over the past several years, Sonoma County has experienced devastating wildfires including the 2017 Tubbs Fire, the 2019 Kincade fire, and the LNU Lightning Complex fires and the Glass Fire in 2020. The 2020 wildfires occurred amidst the County’s COVID-19 response, further complicating operations and exacerbating challenges. The wildfires displaced thousands of residents, destroyed homes and businesses, created hazardous air quality, and have had long lasting economic, environmental, and psychological impacts. In response to the County's history of frequent hazards, the Department of Health Services is proactively working to strengthen existing systems, expand personnel, and enhance services in preparation for the next potential disaster.
