To support the region in its efforts to transition to ZEBs by 2040, SCAG intends to conduct an Innovative Clean Transit Regional Assessment Study (Study) to assess the efforts of the region’s transit operators to develop and implement Zero-Emission Bus Rollout Plans and to assess the readiness of the region to transition to zero-emission transit fleets. The Study’s key objectives include: 1. Assessing the ongoing efforts aimed at transitioning to clean transit solutions throughout the region, including evaluations of existing fleets and supporting infrastructure. 2. Identifying any existing gaps within Zero-Emission Bus Rollout Plans and exploring avenues for improvement and enhancement. 3. Exploring opportunities for enhanced coordination across agencies to streamline efforts and maximize effectiveness. 4. Identifying potential roles for SCAG to play in facilitating the transition to clean transit, including exploring opportunities for assistance through funding sources administered by SCAG. By addressing these objectives, the Study aims to provide valuable insights and recommendations to advance the adoption of clean transit technologies and practices across Southern California. The Study will also help to further the SCAG’s regional transportation goals and strategies, including those outlined in Connect SoCal 2024. For example, the Study aligns with the Connect SoCal’s mobility goal of building and maintaining an integrated multimodal transportation network. The Study is also aligned with SCAG’s Clean Transportation Technology Policy and Resolution (April 2023), which defines clean transportation technology as zero- and near-zero-emission vehicles (ZEV and NZEV, respectively), their supporting infrastructure, and other facilitative products that reduce environmental impact over their life cycle.
