Fine Cover Mulch Specifications 1. Mulch Consistency: a. Use 100% double-shredded hardwood derived from disease-free deciduous trees; b. In no case shall more than 30% of a hardwood mulch mixture be from softwood evergreen trees (i.e.; Pinus genera). The remaining 70% shall be from disease-free deciduous trees; c. Colorized mulch shall be from "virgin shredded wood" with no recycled wood, pallets, or filler products added; d. Free from contaminants such as, but not limited to, leaves, limbs, roots, stumps, pallets, wood chips, sawdust, grass, weeds, yard trimmings, paper, plastic, glass, metal, rock, brick, asphalt, etc.; e. Hardwood mulch shall complete adequate composting cycles of 140 degrees F so that all viable weed seeds are destroyed and no further decomposition due to nitrification will occur. 2. Mulch Color: a. Color-treat with environmentally safe pigment/dyes to obtain a deep dark brown/dark walnut color, absent of any reddish hues and not trending towards black; b. Colorized hardwood mulch shall be properly cured to resist fading. It shall retain its dark brown color, without fading, leaching, washing out, etc. and be warranted against any such defect for a minimum of 12 months. 3. Mulch Particle Size: a. Shredded hardwood mulch shall be minimally double-shredded to yield particle size of less than 1/2 inch in diameter and between 1-3 inches in length with less than 1% by volume larger than 4 inches; b. Minimal thickness shall be 1/8 inch and meet all requirements of A.1 above; c. 90% by volume shall conform to the above size standards. 3. 50/50 Planter Mix Specifications 1. Topsoil Consistency: a. Topsoil shall be a 50/50 blend of Compost and topsoil; b. 50/50 blend should be free of glass, rocks, and other unwanted debris.
