MATERIALS 3.1 STEEL TYPE Poles shall be fabricated from high-strength low-alloy steel, such as: • ASTM A572 Grade 50 or higher • ASTM A1011 or A653 (for formed/welded poles) Steel shall have a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi. 3.2 CORROSION PROTECTION All poles shall receive hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication, conforming to ASTM A123, with: • Minimum average zinc thickness: 3.0 mils • Uniform coverage including internal surfaces • Optional: Duplex coatings (zinc + topcoat epoxy or polyurethane) for coastal or high-corrosion areas 4.0 POLE DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS 4.1 SHAPE AND CONSTRUCTION • Poles shall be tapered round or multisided (octagonal/polygonal) steel shafts • Manufactured in one-piece or slip-joint multi-section designs • Smooth exterior, no sharp edges or exposed weld spatter • Weld seams must be continuous and meet AWS D1.1 4.2 LENGTH AND CLASS Poles shall be supplied in lengths of 30 to 75 feet, in 5-foot increments. Pole class or design shall meet: • Equivalent ANSI O5.1 Class (for replacement of wood poles), or • Ultimate moment capacity, specified in ft-lbf or kNm
