Occasionally, dead marine animals wash ashore on the 3-mile stretch of beach managed by the City of Encinitas Marine Safety Division. The city is looking for a company with the resources and abilities to remove subject marine animals from the beach, and to dispose of the animals at a waste disposal site certified for this activity. The selected company will respond within an agreed upon period of time after being notified by the Marine Safety Division and will be escorted onto the beach by Encinitas Lifeguards. The Contractor must have 4-wheel drive capability on the responding vehicle(s), and all vehicle operators must have received instruction on driving on a public beach from Encinitas Lifeguards. On average, there are about 15 dead animal removals per year, primarily between January and May. Although dead animal removal from the beach is not a frequent event, timeliness of response is important and is in the best interest to the public. The chosen contractor(s) must have the flexibility to remove a variety of sized marine animals, but primarily sea lions.
