The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department (SCMPD) serves the Savannah,Georgia metropolitan area with a resident population approaching 300,000, an additional50,000 daily commuter population, and more than 7 million visitors annually as a majortourist destination. In 2008, there were a total of 12,535 Part I crimes in our jurisdiction.Of these, 1,285 were violent crimes, an increase of 3% from the prior year. To stem thisalarming trend, the Smart Policing Demonstration Initiative will provide a replicable exampleof effective strategies and practices for reducing violent crime by focusing on repeatoffenders and chronic hot spot geographies
