Specifications include, but are not limited to: Size The ARRC requires crossties in the following sizes: Mainline Crossties: 7" x 9" x 8'6" as per ARRC Standard Plan 1.14 Grade Number 1 mainline railroad crossties shall be manufactured in accordance with A.R.E.M.A. Manual of Railway Engineering Volume 1, Chapter 3; West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau Grading Rules #17, paragraph 192b, and the ARRC specifications contained herein. Anti-splitting Devices All crossties shall have 18 gage galvanized steel multi-nail anti-splitting end plates in accordance with A.R.E.M.A. Manual of Railway Engineering Volume 1, Chapter 30, Section 3.1.6.2.3 entitled “Nail Plates” with the following dimensions 6-3/16” x 7” conforming to section 3.1.7 “Application of Anti-splitting Devices“. Packaging 7" x 9" x 8'6" ties are to be bundled in four (4) wide, and by four (4) tall bundles (16 ties per bundle). Bundles are to be secured by two bands of 1 1/4" x 0.044 high strength or stronger steel banding applied one each 12" from each end. Bands must be tight and double clamped. Species All ties shall be hardwood. Acceptable species are: Red Oak and White Oak. Other species will require approval by ARRC Chief Engineer prior to acceptance.
