Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Department of Public Works is responsible for managing the City's roadway and drainage system.This includes the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of these systems. TheDepartment is also responsible for managing the solid waste needs of the City as well as theoperation of transit services.The Department currently contracts with a variety of professional firms for engineering, planning, andsupport activities necessary to operate departmental activities. Prior to January 2009, all servicesprovided by the Department were contracted out. In accordance with the Development ServicesSystem Assessment Report dated April 22, 2008, prepared by Sinclair & Associates, the City isbeginning to transition the make-up of the Department from one that contracts for all of its services toone that employs a mix of core-level City staff and contracted services. The first phase of thistransition was completed with the hiring of a City-employed department head (Director of PublicWorks)
