Specifications include, but are not limited to: develop and implement a work plan to prevent and reduce marijuana use by youth, ages 12-20, within Rural Communities throughout Washington State. Work plans may incorporate tobacco prevention efforts, such as preventing and reducing the use of e-cigarettes/vaping, as they align with marijuana use. Conduct needs assessment, identifying youth substance use/marijuana prevention needs within Rural Communities throughout WA State. Coordinate network of rural community key partners to inform on program planning and/or asset development. This network will be known as the “Rural Cross sector Advisory Panel”. Sector representation of this workgroup will be identified during Rural Communities Needs Assessment. Develop specific communications, messaging and/or assets to meet the needs of rural communities throughout Washington State, using proven end effective substance use prevention strategies approaches to: Reduce youth access to and availability of marijuana and vaping products. Increase student reports of parent, caregiver, or other influential adult engagement in youth marijuana prevention. Educate key leaders and decision-makers on how marijuana use/vaping impacts youth living within rural communities. Increase the perception of harm of marijuana use among youth. Increase support for marijuana, tobacco-use, and vaping/e-cigarette laws and prevention norms. Engage community stakeholders, existing coalitions, and community-based resources to prevent youth from starting to use marijuana. Remain current on the latest research and/or trends in substance use prevention, the health impact of marijuana use, and research-based, evidence-based, or culturally appropriate promising practices for addressing substance use within rural communities.
