Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1. All steel, except for structural tubing, shall be Grade 36. Structural tubing shall be ASTM A500, Grade B. Steel for rollers shall be 1018 cold rolled. 2. Contractor is NOT required to submit shop drawings for review by VDOT. 3. All steel shall be painted black except for ladder rungs, ladder top treads and bar grab handles which shall be painted yellow. Prime coat shall be direct-to-metal epoxy. Finish coat shall be high-quality urethane. Paint shall be applied according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Before ordering paint materials, Contractor shall submit a list of proposed coatings and specifications to VDOT for review and approval. Prior to application of prime coat, the surface shall be prepared in accordance with Method 1 and Method 5. Abrasive blast cleaning shall remove visible coating, rust and mill scale in accordance with the requirements of SSPC-SP-10/NACE No. 2. Recyclable abrasive containing rust that adversely affects the cleanliness of the blasted surface will not be permitted. After blast cleaning, the surface profile shall be from 1 to 3 mils in a dense uniform pattern of depressions and ridges. Both shop-blasted and fieldblasted surfaces shall be coated within 24 hours. If rust bloom develops, blast cleaning shall be repeated at no additional cost to VDOT.
