Specifications include, but are not limited to: The proposed new Oyster Hatchery building design is a free-standing, one story building of approximately 19,600 gross square feet. The new building will be sited on the southeast section of the main campus with proximity to the necessary utilities. The site includes circulation and access to visitor and employee parking, delivery truck access, and loading bays located to serve the Center. A separate building will be constructed for Field Lab work space of approximately 2,080 gross square feet. The new Center will contain wet lab spaces for the nurturing and growth of oysters from conception through spat development for distribution to commercial hatcheries/processing facilities primarily located on the eastern shore of Virginia’s coastal region, as well as throughout the state’s easternmost riverine localities. The new building will contain spaces for wet labs, algae production, workshop, offices, meeting spaces, and support areas. The detached field lab building will contain a workshop, gear storage and wet lab space. The project will include modifications to the existing seawater pumping system and provide new seawater distribution to this facility and the associated outdoor nusery. Exterior support spaces include area for outdoor nursery tanks, areas for 10,000-gallon seawater storage tanks, and loading and outdoor work areas.
