Specifications include, but are not limited to: Graham-Smith tracts (Dry Creek Barrens) Burn Unit 2 Access and Fire line. The proposed access trail, approximately 2200 linear feet, with an average width of approximately 15 feet (approximately 0.8 acres to be constructed via forestry mulching operation) will provide fair-weather access for Burn Units 1 and 2, and will serve as the western fire line for Burn Unit 2. The north section of the Burn Unit 2 fire line, proposed for mulching, is approximately 700’ (approximately 0.25 ac). The broken nature of the terrain may limit fire line construction via forestry mulching north of the proposed access trail, but will be utilized where feasible to improve efficiency of fire line construction; and 2.) Williams-Wynn tracts, of The Cedars Natural Area Preserve (NAP), located in Lee County, Virginia. Eastern red cedars, hardwoods and woody understory will be removed via forestry mulching on approximately 14 acres to expand the size of the existing barrens, create connectivity between the barrens, and to create varied canopy structure that will include areas with relatively low stocking density. Clearing of woody biomass will provide light conditions favorable for several plant species recognized as rare in Virginia, will facilitate access, and will enhance safety for future prescribed burning operations.
