Specifications include, but are not limited to: The HTP conducts several public events throughout the year in conjunction with field projects, the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic, and the Parker Annex Archaeological Center open house. These events routinely draw hundreds of visitors who come with an interest in learning more about the SCDNR and about the archaeology and history in South Carolina. Events range from a single day to as many as several weeks, depending on the event. To assist with the dissemination of accurate information about South Carolina’s past, we seek a primitive technology specialist to join our team during these important public events. The qualified specialist will conduct technology demonstrations at these events using traditional skills, materials, and methods. By traditional skills, materials, and methods, we mean those that are in keeping with the skills, materials, and methods used by South Carolina’s indigenous native groups, as evidenced through the archaeological, historical, and oral records. Occasionally applied (experimental) research may be required to increase our understanding of the technological history of South Carolina. Therefore, qualified vendors should be able and willing to conduct applied research, as needed. Each event will include a set of primitive technology demonstrations as determined in collaboration with HTP staff. Qualified vendors should be able to perform the following demonstrations using traditional skills, materials, and methods: flint knapping, bone pin production, shell bead production, fire starting, coil-built pottery making, paddle making, basket making, and temporary shelter construction. Bone pin and pottery production demonstrations should include the application of decorations that are consistent with those found in the archaeological record of South Carolina from the late Archaic Period through the Mississippian periods.
