Specifications include, but are not limited to: Maintenance Maintenance is a thorough examination and repair, as needed, of the portable fire extinguishers and is covered in NFPA 10. Maintenance is required at least once a year – more frequently when indicated by a need detected by DFMPS during their routine monthly inspection. Maintenance is also required whenever extinguishers undergo hydrostatic testing. Because maintenance is required to include a thorough examination of the mechanical parts, extinguishing agent and expelling means of each portable fire extinguisher, it must be performed by a trained technician who has the proper tools and appropriate manufacturer’s service manual(s). Maintenance procedures are outlined in NFPA 10. New tamper seals are required to be installed whenever maintenance is performed on rechargeable fire extinguishers. Annual maintenance must conform to all applicable NFPA, Federal, State, OSHA and Local Authority having jurisdiction Standards, Regulations, Codes and Requirements and include, but not be limited, to the following: Check that unit is properly hung with the proper manufacturer's hanger. Remove the extinguisher from its hanger. Check the gauge pressure. Check the condition of the gauge and its compatibility with the extinguisher. Check the weight of the extinguisher. Check that the last hydro-test test date is within code requirements. Check the last maintenance inspection(s) for compliance, if applicable. Check the valve and shell for damage or corrosion. Remove the hose and inspect it for cracks or splits. Check the hose threads for signs of wear. Perform conductivity test on hose, per NFPA 10 Check the condition of the discharge horn. Check for obstructions that interfere with accessibility of the extinguisher. Break the extinguisher seal and remove the locking pin. Check the upper and lower handles. Replace safety disk, if necessary. Verification of service collar (replace if necessary). Replace o-ring, if necessary. Replace the locking pin and reseal the extinguisher. Check the valve opening for powder or any foreign matter. Refill extinguishers, if needed. Empty & Recharge all stored pressure-loaded stream fire extinguishers.
