Specifications include, but are not limited to: MnDOT requests responses for preliminary design components of the John A. Blatnik Bridge (MN Bridge 9030, WI Bridge B-16-5) was constructed from 1958 - 1961. The four lane structure carries 33,900 vehicles per day on I-535 between Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. The 52-span structure consists of two superstructure types: 1) the navigation span is a 600-ft long suspended tied steel arch truss between two continuous, cantilevered deck trusses and 2) continuous steel pin and hanger multi-girder approach spans to the north and south. The bridge spans the St. Louis River and the busy ports of Duluth and Superior. Clearance over the St. Louis River is 120 feet.The goal of this project is to complete the environmental documentation, preliminary geometric layout, bridge type alternatives and risk management for the replacement/rehabilitation of the Blatnik Bridge. This work needs to be completed by 2023 to allow time for the final design of the selected bridge option.
