Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1. Within the primary project treatment area (blue on attached map), cut and pile all trees and shrubs that are greater than 3 feet tall or 2 inches in diameter, excluding all oak. Target species may include green ash, cottonwood, eastern red cedar, elm, box elder, buckthorn, Russian olive, sumac, and black willow. The primary project treatment area consists of approximately 20 acres. 2. Within the primary project treatment area (blue on attached map), treat all low density trees and shrubs less than 3 feet tall or 2 inches in diameter with herbicide using the basal bark method. 3. High density sumac patches may be mechanically mowed with a rotary or drum-style brush mower. Sumac stumps in high density patches do not have to be stump treated, as these areas will be mowed repeatedly in future years as part of other projects. However, all target, non-sumac trees greater than 2” in diameter within sumac patches shall be cut and stump treated per above. 4. Within the second project treatment area (red on the attached map), cut and pile all Siberian elm trees that are greater than 3 feet tall or 2 inches in diameter. No other trees shall be cut in this treatment area. This area consists of approximately 9 acres. The purpose of this portion of the project is to eliminate seed sources affecting future prairie restoration efforts in adjacent fields. 5. Contractor shall work with the Project Supervisor to determine appropriate piling areas. Piling shall occur on crop ground or non-native cool season grasses patches (rather than native prairie) whenever possible. 6. The Project Supervisor will either provide a GPS file with project boundaries or use flagging on site. 7. Eastern red cedar and sumac stumps in high density areas do not need to be treated with herbicide but all other species require treatment as outlined in 1.9 Use of Herbicide (below). No live limbs shall be left on Easter red cedar stumps. 8. All cut stumps shall be cut horizontally to the ground within 3 inches of the ground surface and left in a manner to prevent damage to vehicle tires or otherwise hinder the use of vehicles on the site. Sheared stumps may need to be trimmed in order to satisfy this requirement. Cut stumps located in standing water or along existing fence lines where embedded fence wire is an issue may also be excluded if approved in writing by the Project Supervisor. 9. Extreme care must be given to avoid damage underlying prairie grasses and forbs with equipment or herbicide. All wheeled/track equipment may only be used on frozen ground or ground dry enough so vehicles and other equipment do not leave ruts. No equipment is allowed on steep slopes (as indicated on the attached map). The Project Supervisor reserves the right to suspend work if rutting or severe substrate damage is occurring during work operations. ATVs and snowmobiles may be used to facilitate herbicide treatment and hand cutting. 10. The Project Area contains a power line. All equipment operators shall use caution when operating in this area. 11. Use caution when entering and exiting access off CR 13, as this road can be busy. 12. All cut material must be removed from the site or piled and burned before the project completion date. See 1.10 Pile burning for further instructions.
