Specifications include, but are not limited to: The 2018 Leading by Example Clean Energy Grant Program – Solar (Canopies and Other) & Innovative Solar (Program) for state entities seeks to increase the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at state facilities, particularly solar canopies and innovative solar technologies (see more details below). Solar canopies, also known as solar carports, are solar installations that are constructed over an operating parking surface, such as a lot or garage. In utilizing already-developed land for clean energy installations, solar canopies present a significant opportunity for MA state facilities to generate clean renewable electricity without developing green spaces or relying on crowded rooftops. Solar canopies provide ancillary benefits as well by reducing heat absorption on parking surfaces and providing shade and shelter for parked vehicles. In addition to solar canopies, innovative solar projects that utilize emerging solar technologies or mounting strategies not seen in conventional roof- or ground-mounted projects are encouraged through this Program. Conventional roof- and ground-mounted projects will also be supported through this Program at a lower incentive level.
