Specifications include, but are not limited to: Fire hydrant flanges should not be located more than 6” above the bury line with the detailed 2” minimum as the desired distance. The Water Department shall field locate water valves one time during construction when requested by the Contractor. It shall be the Contractor’s responsibility to preserve such field locations during the construction process. Water valves, water valve boxes or fire hydrants damaged during construction shall be repaired by the Contractor at his own expense. Contractor shall be responsible for implementing erosion control methods during construction to prevent unnecessary silt/sediment discharge through downstream properties and/or storm sewer systems. Contractor shall install and maintain erosion controls as directed by the Engineer. These controls may include, but not be limited to: hay bales; silt fences, temporary mulching, curb inlet protection or other controls necessary to inhibit sediment runoff during construction. Existing water mains and service connections are to remain in service until proposed new mains have been completed, tested and passed. The existing water mains are to be plugged and abandoned in place no more than 24” from the point of disconnection from water mains that remain in service. All existing piping to be abandoned shall be plugged and capped at each end and shall be completely removed from service. This includes removal or capping of existing lines, valve removal, and concrete filling of valve boxes no longer needed, as called out on the drawings. Do not plug and abandon existing mains until new mains are placed into service and all services have been transferred to the new main.
