2018-WSCU-LIB - Enhancement and Renovation of Savage Library Entrance

Western Colorado University is seeking a historic preservation architect to provide architectural design, documentation and construction administration services for the exterior rehabilitation of a historic Library on the Gunnison campus.
 
The Library opened in 1939 and was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by Temple Hoyne Buell. A major addition was added in the 1960s and the original library was listed in 1993 in the Colorado Historical Society’s State Register of Historical Properties. Many elements of the exterior envelope have been examined by professionals and have been deemed to require extensive work.
 
Specifically, architectural design services are required to facilitate the following restoration activities.

1. Stucco Restoration, with options for partial and full stucco restoration with primary emphasis given to the main historic entry.
2. South entrance concrete restoration
3. Full reconstruction of the existing concrete stairs is required. New elements will include simple wrought iron handrails down the middle of the upper stairs, single handrails on the lower stairs and concrete planters on the pedestals for fall protection for ADA and code compliance.
4. Terra Cotta Restoration. Repairs/replication will be based on the approved construction documents and Preservation Brief 7: The Preservation of Historic Terra Cotta. Repairs will include repointing with a replica mortar based on a mortar analysis conducted prior to construction and match the historic in texture, color and profile. Repairs will also include units that need glazing repair and repair of minor spalling/fractures with an approved product such as Edison Coatings and helical screws, if needed. The repairs will be made by hand, gently removing the failed finishes/surfaces to a sound layer and then filling them and tooling them flush with the historic surface. The repair will match the existing glazing color, texture and finish. Finally, the brackets will be replicated, matching the terra cotta composition, glazing color and texture, profile and shape of the element. Prior to fabrication/repairs, shop drawings and mockups will be submitted. Mockups will be fabricated for repairs, mortar repointing and replication of all deficiency repairs prior to the work.
5. South Entrance Door Restoration. The doors are in fair condition. There is evidence of minor paint failure and open joints where water has entered and caused minor damage to the surrounding wood. Paint and wood damage can be seen at the inset panels and at the bottom rails. Additionally, one of the pieces of cathedral glass in the inset panels has been replaced with clear plate glass. The hardware appears to be functioning adequately, but the wiring/conduit attached to the door frame has damaged the door frame and adjacent plaster surface. The transom window and decorative screen above is in fair condition with minor paint and wood deterioration.
