The El Paso County Department of Human Services (Department) requires occasional transportation services for school-age children placed in foster care. For a small number of children residing in foster care, the Department must provide transportation between the foster home and the child’s school. When these transportation services are needed, they generally consist of an extended period of regular transports two times per school-day: Once in the early morning from home to school, then a return trip from school to home, generally mid-afternoon. The time of the return home trip may vary, depending on after-school meetings or activities, or if the child leaves early due to illness, etc. The transports are generally required each weekday during the school year, except for holidays, school closures due to weather, days when the child stays home from school, due to illness. The Department expects the average distance between home and school to be 10 to 20 miles, for a daily roundtrip average (per child) of 20 to 40 miles. Services will generally be required during the school year (August-May), and may occur outside these times if required by the Department.
