Mines is soliciting proposals from qualified firms to provide health insurance coverage for Mines’ students. Proposals are welcome from insurance firms and insurance brokers. Approximately 6,938 students attend Mines, and the Student Health Insurance Plan (“SHIP”) is an annual, full- service medical insurance plan tailored to the needs of the students. Historically, approximately 20% of students utilize Mines offered insurance.
All degree seeking domestic students, and international students regardless of degree seeking status, are required to have health insurance that meets Mines’ requirements which meets or exceeds the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements.
Students are allowed the opportunity to show proof of coverage through an Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant insurance plan that meets the criteria outlined by the University from other sources. Students that satisfy this requirement through the completion of an online insurance waiver during the advertised waiver-period, are allowed to opt out of the SHIP. All students who do not submit a waiver or who submit a waiver that does not meet Mines’ requirements will be automatically enrolled in the SHIP and will be required to pay the cost of the plan.
Students pay a Health Services fee that allows them open access to services provided in the on-campus Health Center at no charge for most services. Mines encourages offerors to explore creative ways to incorporate the use of the University Health Center into their proposal to provide cost efficiencies and convenience to the students.
