The CDFW’s hatchery programs support a premiere commercial and recreational salmon harvest. Hatchery fish released upstream and near hatchery facilities face a gauntlet of hazards on the way to the bay: diversions, poor habitat, and predation. To improve survival to the ocean, the CDFW’s hatchery program began trucking fish to downstream locations and out to the bay to bypass these delta hazards. Trucked fish released into the bay are subject to thermal shock, osmotic stress, and disorientation making these fish easy targets for birds and aquatic predators.
