Specifications include, but are not limited to: Research has shown the quality of preparation programs can influence the success of school leaders, including impact on student achievement.1 Similar to medical residencies, residencies are a critical element of high-quality programs because they provide opportunities to practice in real-life settings.2 According to national standards for principal preparation, internships should provide a minimum of six months of concentrated clinical experience that include authentic leadership activities within a school setting and overseen by a trained mentor. 3 During the FY24 fiscal year, state funding was allocated to New Mexico approved Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) to design and develop a residency pilot for principals, counselors, and social workers through a state-led Community of Practice. As a result, programs are prepared to launch full-year residency experiences during FY 25.
