CDOT traditionally used a full time staff Librarian to manage the CDOT Library, manage the collection, handle all patron requests, and provide technical editing on CDOT research reports. However the CDOT Librarian retired in June of 2014 and the position has been vacant since. Due to current restrictions on hiring and overall number of full time employees (FTE), the position has yet to be filled but a part-time temporary intern enrolled in a MLS program has assisted for the last six months. During that time CDOT began using EOS, an Integrated Library System (replacing an Access database that had inconsistent catalog info and was accessible only to the small Research Branch staff), but it has not been fully implemented yet.
The Librarian position vacancy, the ILS, and CDOT’s plans to move to a new building with a new Library facility in early 2018, provide the opportunity to re-evaluate the need, approach, and strategy for providing library services at CDOT.
